Phoenix Churches and Cathedrals

Phoenix contains many beautiful and historic churches, chapels and religious temples. One of the most well-known in the city is without question St. Mary's Basilica, which officially goes by the name of the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Appearing on the National Register of Historic Places, this basilica boasts stylish Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, topped by four grand domes. This is the only basilica in the whole of Arizona and was visited by Pope John Paul II in 1987. Also of interest to those of a religious persuasion in Phoenix are the Arizona Buddhist Temple, the Brophy Chapel and the First Christian Church.

Situated in the center of Phoenix, St. Mary's Basilica is a particularly beautiful church, constructed between the years of 1902 and 1914, and dedicated the following year. This important basilica is one of the area's oldest Roman Catholic churches and was once visited by Pope John Paul II.

Arizona Buddhist Temple

Standing on the north-western side of the city center and just a few blocks away from the Hayden Plaza West Shopping Center, the Arizona Buddhist Temple dates back to the 1930s and is a grand Japanese-style temple. This historic building is the oldest of its kind in Arizona and welcomes visitors.

Brophy Chapel

Located in Phoenix city center, close to Windsor Square and the Upton Plaza Shopping Center, Brophy Chapel was built in the 1920s and is a Spanish chapel, full of historic and original features. Attractions at Brophy Chapel include detailed stone carvings, old stained-glass windows, an ancient wooden crucifix and regular services.

First Christian Church
